1) "Brass" -- As to brass candle sconces brass Pronunciation: 'bras Function: noun Etymology: Middle English bras, from Old English bræs; akin to Middle Low German bras metal 1 : an alloy consisting essentially of copper and zinc in variable proportions 2 a : the brass instruments of an orchestra or band -- often used in plural b : a usually brass memorial tablet c : bright metal fittings, utensils, or ornaments d : empty cartridge shells 3 : brazen self-assurance : GALL 4 singular or plural in construction a : high-ranking members of the military b : persons in high positions (as in a business or the government) - brass adjective Pronunciation Symbols Brass is the term used for alloys of copper and zinc; the proportions of zinc and copper can be varied to create a range of brasses, each of which has unique properties[1]. Note that in comparison bronze is principally an alloy of copper and tin.[2]. Despite this distinction, some types of brasses are called bronzes. Brass is a substitutional alloy. A decorative brass paperweight, left, along with zinc and copper samples. Brass has a yellow color, somewhat similar to gold. It is relatively resistant to tarnishing, and is often used as decoration and for coins. Brass has been known to humans since prehistoric times, long before zinc itself was discovered. It was produced by melting copper together with calamine, a zinc ore. During this process, the zinc is extracted from the calamine and mixes with the copper. Pure zinc, on the other hand, is too reactive to have been produced by ancient metalworking techniques. Brass is mainly used for decorative, plumbing and electrical applications. - 1 Properties

| The malleability and acoustic properties of brass have made it the metal of choice for brass musical instruments such as the trombone, tuba, trumpet and euphonium, as well as the French Horn. Even though the saxophone is classified as a woodwind instrument and the harmonica is a free reed aerophone, both are also often made from brass. In organ pipes designed as "reed" pipes, brass strips are used as the "reed". Brass has higher malleability than copper or zinc. 2) "Candle" -- As to brass candle sconces 1can·dle Pronunciation: 'kan-d&l Function: noun Etymology: Middle English candel, from Old English, from Latin candela, from candEre 1 : a usually molded or dipped mass of wax or tallow containing a wick that may be burned (as to give light, heat, or scent or for celebration or votive purposes) 2 : something resembling a candle in shape or use <a sulfur candle for fumigating> 3 : required effort, expense, or trouble -- usually used in the phrase not worth the candle 4 : CANDELA Pronunciation Symbols A close-up image of a candle showing the wick and the various regions of the flame. Note the truncated wick being consumed at the lower-right edge of the flame. A candle is a light source usually consisting of an internal wick that rises through the center of a column of solid fuel. Prior to the mid 19th century, the majority of candles were tallow (a byproduct of beef fat rendering). The fuel now is nearly always some form of wax, with paraffin wax being the most common. Gel, soy, beeswax, and vegetable-based candles are also available. A candle manufacturer is usually known as a chandler. Prior to the candle being ignited, the wick is saturated with the fuel in its solid form. The heat of the match or other flame being used to light the candle first melts and then vaporizes a small amount of the fuel. Once vaporized, the fuel combines with oxygen in the atmosphere to form a flame. This flame then provides sufficient heat to keep the candle burning via a self-sustaining chain of events: the heat of the flame melts the top of the mass of solid fuel, the liquified fuel then moves upward through the wick via capillary action, and the liquified fuel is then vaporized to burn within the candle's flame. The burning of the fuel takes place in several distinct regions (as evidenced by the various colors that can be seen within the candle's flame). Within the bluer, hotter regions, hydrogen is being separated from the fuel and burned to form water vapor. The brighter, yellower part of the flame is the remaining carbon soot being oxidized to form carbon dioxide. As the mass of the solid fuel is melted and consumed, the candle grows shorter. Portions of the wick that are not evaporating the liquid fuel are, ideally, consumed in the flame, limiting the exposed length of the wick and keeping the temperature and rate of fuel consumption even. Some wicks require manual trimming with scissors or a wick trimmer for even burning.
3) "Sconces" -- As to brass candle sconces 1sconce Pronunciation: 'skän(t)s Function: noun Etymology: Middle English, from Anglo-French sconce, *esconse screened candle or lantern, from escunser to hide, obscure, from Old French escons, past participle of escondre to hide, from Vulgar Latin *excondere, alteration of Latin abscondere -- more at ABSCOND 1 : a bracket candlestick or group of candlesticks; also : an electric light fixture patterned on a candle sconce 2 : HEAD, SKULL Pronunciation Symbols ..."
